Malas, taken from the Sanskrit:माला mala,(MA-LA) or malas, are known by many names:

1. Buddhist prayer rosary,

3. Japa mala,
4. Prayer beads,

6. Hindu prayer beads

Malas are used for meditation and prayer to protect the mind from the five poisons of karmically harmful states of mind. Reciting mantra, with your mala to count recitations, creates the opportunity to transform negative, poisons into virtuous, positive states of mind.

The qualities using the mala helps transform are:

• pride, which transforms into equanimity, humility, nobility and compassion
• hatred (aversion), which transforms into understanding
• jealousy or envy, which transforms into joy
• craving, grasping and greed (attachment), which transforms into discriminating awareness and generosity
• ignorance (delusion), which transforms into clarity and wisdom

Malas are made with 108 or 111 beads, plus a guru bead. A japa mala is used for counting mantra recitations while chanting, or mentally repeating sacred phrases, aka, mantra. If the mala and mantra are recited with good intentions it can awaken increased wisdom, loving-kindness, compassion, calmness, healing and all virtues needed for a good life.

Buddhists and Hindus use the Mala to count a round of mantra, or prayers in Sanskrit and/or Tibetan, typically in cycles of 108.
